Client: The Diocese of London
Our groundbreaking project with the Diocese of London, set out proposals to transform 38 out of 51 disused church spires in the heart of the City of London into vibrant creative studio spaces for budding entrepreneurs. This ambitious project has not only garnered accolades, including the prestigious RIBA Forgotten Spaces Competition first prize in 2011, but it has also breathed new life into these historic structures, with four spires already reborn as thriving studios. Our journey began with a quest for cost-effective office space for our own creative studio, leading to a serendipitous partnership with the Diocese of London. Inspired by our own circumstances, we explored how to revive these iconic yet neglected landmarks while meeting the burgeoning demand for workspace in the city.
The Diocese entrusted us with a mission to rejuvenate these sacred spaces, each with its unique history and architectural character, into dynamic, contemporary studios, all within a grand thirty-year vision. Guided by the essence of each church spire and its surroundings, our approach centres on celebrating their historic significance while reimagining their purpose. We've meticulously considered the needs of future occupants, forging a symbiotic relationship between heritage and innovation, with each studio uniquely tailored to its environment. From the intricate restoration of delicate stonework to the modern, functional interiors, we've strived to enhance the inherent beauty of these structures. Our designs seamlessly merge historical charm with contemporary utility, forging spaces that inspire creativity. Within these transformed spires, we've discreetly integrated measures to reduce energy consumption, prolong their lifespan, and make conscientious material choices. Our unobtrusive commitment to sustainability contributes to a greener future without compromising the integrity of these iconic landmarks.
