The Royal Academy of Arts entrusted us with the design of their 'Mavericks' exhibition, an exploration of the groundbreaking work of twelve visionary architects throughout history. This exhibit wasn't just about showcasing maverick architects; it was about immersing visitors in their world, enabling them to ponder the profound impact of these architectural pioneers. Our journey began with a thoughtful response to the client's vision. The Royal Academy sought a narrative that would do justice to the audacious spirit of these architects. So, we conceived a timeline that told their story with subtlety and grace. We identied a remarkable opportunity in the existing holes adorning the eastern room's walls, remnants of previous exhibitions. By repurposing these voids, we minimised disruption, leaving a captivating palimpsest of earlier displays—a testament to the ever-evolving artistic spirit. Crafting this exhibition demanded meticulous attention to detail. We wove a delicate tapestry of dot constellations, each representing a unique architectural luminary. The placement and size of these dots adhered to a precise chronological order. Our design was intentionally subtle, letting the brilliance of the architects shine through. Every element, every material, was a carefully chosen note in this composition. As architects, we hold a deep-seated responsibility towards the environment. Our approach of reusing existing wall features not only preserved the integrity of the space but also reduced waste. We embraced the beauty of longevity; in every decision, from material selection to energy-conscious lighting, we subtly wove sustainability into the very fabric of this project. In the end, the 'Mavericks' exhibition became not just a showcase of architectural history but a testament to our ability to listen, adapt, and create with sensitivity. It is a quiet ode to those architects who dared to defy convention, and a reection of our unwavering commitment to design that stands the test of time, both in its aesthetic and its environmental impact.
